Schengen Convention of 19 June 1990
On 14 June 1985 in the City of Schengen (Luxembourg) there was concluded an agreement on gradual abolition of border checks between the Contracting Parties (Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany and France). This agreement became a basis for the Schengen Convention of 19 June 1990 establishing amongst others the Schengen Information System (the SIS). The aim of the operation of the SIS is the assistance to the police and custom services in exchange of information pertaining to persons crossing the borders of the Contracting Parties. The Convention contains detailed provisions on supplying the information to the SIS, their storage and communication. Its provisions also specify the periods of information processing for the purposes defined in this Convention.
