Charter of Fundamental Rights of European Union
The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, the project of which was agreed in October 2000, is a document adopted and declared during the summit of the European Union in Nice in December 2005. The Charter specifies the catalogue of fundamental rights and freedoms of the European Union citizens. This catalogue apart from the values commonly recognised by various international instruments such as the right to human dignity, the right to life, ban on tortures and inhuman treatment, the right to freedom, the right to fair trial) contains also the right to personal data protection (provided for in Article 8). The Charter became a basis for further discussions on rights and freedoms of the citizens of the European Union. The values indicated in the Charter have initiated discussion on possible Constitution for Europe.
