9th Data Protection Day – 28 January 2015

In January 2015, the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection organised the European Data Protection Day events already for the ninth time – calendar of the 9th Data Protection Day events.

On this occasion, as each year, a conference devoted to most recent issues concerning the right to privacy and personal data protection was held. The Conference entitled “Personal Data Protection – the Most Recent National and European Legal Regulations” took place in Warsaw, at the seat of the Central Agricultural Library at 66 Krakowskie Przedmieście St.

The agenda of the Conference comprised the topics related to the European data protection reform, the amendment to the Act on Personal Data Protection, as well as the principles of personal data processing in the European DPA’s practice.   

During the Conference, employees of the Bureau of the Inspector General were giving legal advice on the protection of personal data, and everyone interested could obtain complex information in this field, as well as publications and other information materials on personal data protection.

Calendar of the 9th Data Protection Day events:

  • On 20 January 2015, Data Protection Day event was traditionally held at the seat of the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to the EU in Brussels. As each year, the meeting was attended by over one hundred experts, representatives of UE and national institutions, MEPs and their assistants, as well as journalists, which deal with privacy protection related subjects every day. The guests were welcomed by Andrzej Lewiński, Deputy Inspector General for Personal Data Protection and Sebastian Barkowski, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Poland to the EU.
  • On 28 January 2015 in Warsaw, Conference entitled “Personal Data Protection – the Most Recent National and European Legal Regulations”was opened byAndrzej Lewiński, Deputy Inspector General for Personal Data Protection  and Roman Dmowski, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Administration and Digitization. The Conference constituted a key voice in the debate on personal data protection reform. It was also an opportunity do obtain relevant information and materials regarding the amendment of the provisions of the Act on Personal Data Protection which entered into force on 1 January 2015. The event was attended by ca. 300 participants, among others representatives of DPOs of public administration authorities, territorial self-government, NGOs, representatives of the education sector, scientific and business environment, from all around Poland. Participation in the Conference was free of charge after registration using a form available on GIODO website. Moreover, GIODO employees gave free of charge consultation on personal data protection to citizens. The Conference has been organised regularly since 2007.
  • On 29 January 2015, the Bureau of the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection (GIODO) organised in cooperation with the Warsaw City Council classes for children „My Data, My Treasure”, within the action „Winter in the City”, in Warsaw. Representatives of the GIODO Bureau conducted 2-hours long workshop, during which pupils of Warsaw primary schools could learn how important the protection of personal data and the respect for the right to privacy are. The classes were also an opportunity to reflect on how to safely use the achievements of modern technologies and how to consciously avoid online threats.
  • January/February 2015 – organisation of the Data Protection Day events by teachers vocational training centres, primary, middle and secondary schools all around Poland within the framework of the Poland-wide Educational Programme „Your Data – Your Concern”. The activities undertaken at the local level by participants of the Programme are aimed at raising awareness of the protection of one’s privacy and personal data among the entire school community and local environment.
