Data Protection Day in schools and in centers of teachers’ vocational training
The aim of the Data Protection Day celebrated in schools is to:
- disseminate knowledge on personal data protection,
- promote the principles of data protection among children and youth,
- develop knowledge and skills in the area of safe functioning in the era of rapid development of new technologies,
- raise awareness and responsible attitudes among students,
- draw attention of parents and teachers to the importance of protecting personal data and the right to privacy of students.
The Data Protection Day celebrated in schools and in centers of teachers’ vocational training was an occasion for interesting meetings and inspiring discussions on the protection of personal data among teachers, students and parents. Nationwide, numerous events were organized under the slogan of the GIODO’s educational Programme "Your data - your business". With the aid of the lessons’ scenarios passed by the GIODO, teachers conducted lessons in primary and secondary schools and in schools for students with disabilities. Teachers also organized workshops and lectures for high school students.
Having in mind safety of students, meetings for parents and teachers about students' rights to privacy and protection of personal data were held in educational institutions. To celebrate the Data Protection Day, schools organized a number of competitions for students (knowledge, art, multimedia, etc.). Thematic newsletters and pictures were hung on the walls of classrooms and corridors. Appeals in schools were the culmination of events, during which the winners of the competitions were awarded prizes. Also, students performed roles in plays about protection of personal data. Pupils, despite the bad weather conditions, visited many offices which process personal data, participated in the urban games and happenings during which they distributed the thematic leaflets among passers-by.
We would like to thank all the directors of the schools and the centers of teachers’ vocational training, which joined the program of the Inspector General in the school year 2012/2013, for organizing educational initiatives on the protection of personal data and on the right to privacy of children and adolescents. In the "Year of Safe School" it is crucial to underline the role and nature of those activities aimed at raising awareness among students and providing them with a sense of security. Knowledge about the respect of own privacy and the ability to protect personal data is of crucial importance to achieve this objective.
We would like to express special thanks to the Programme’s Coordinators and teachers closely involved in the organization of so many interesting initiatives within the Programme "Your data – Your concern (...)" for promotion of the subject of personal data protection and the right to privacy among students, teachers and parents.
